The theory behind “good enough” therapy:

The “good enough caregiver” is a term coined by psychoanalyst and pediatrician, Donald Winnicott. It refers to the reality that no parent or caregiver can meet their infant’s needs “perfectly” 100% of the time. Moments of failure or misunderstanding are inevitable, and even necessary for the infant to master critical life skills.

Despite the fact that we literally require “failure” or imperfection to thrive and survive as a species, many of us still try to hold ourselves to impossible standards of perfection. We believe that perfection is the goal, rather than adjusting to and coping with life’s challenges adaptively.

Here at Good Enough Therapy Services, we will work with you to reframe these harsh and unfair personal expectations, understand why you are already “good enough” as you are, and then collaborate on strategies to help you make desired improvements in your life.

Finally, the ethos of Good Enough Therapy Services is that the therapy space is a practice ground for real world relationships. As your therapist, I will do my best to meet your needs, but when I fall short, I whole-heartedly welcome the opportunity to use this as an opportunity to practice reparative action and further support your growth and healing!
